EJ Reefer (my great uncle) and Max Charles Reefer (my great grandfather) founded the business. E J Reefer lived near 58th and Brookside Rd. in Kansas City, MO. Max Reefer and his wife lived at 37th and Pennsylvania, Kansas City, MO. My paternal grandparents, Jack and Arene, died in 1920 as a result of the final phase of the flu epidemic, leaving my father and his brother orphaned at ages 4 and 7 respectively. The family were non-drinkers and supported Prohibition! (submitted by an anonymous visitor to the site, 7-24-2009)

An ad from Munsey’s magazine dated 1900 lists warehouses in St. Louis, Kansas City, Louisville and Chicago.

The company used the brand names:
“Gold Medal”, “Green Mountain Rye”, “Real Kentucky Royal”, “Smoky Hollow Rye”, and “Tastewell.”
